The original message-dyed, heart-shaped sweets date back to 1902 and often made humorously long-winded prophecies: “Married in Pink, He will take to drink.” Today’s candies sport some of the original sayings including “Be Mine,” and “Kiss Me.” In the early 1990s, Sweethearts updated the sayings with examples such as “Call Me,” “Fax Me,” and “Text Me”—emblematic of our modern, tech-savvy times.
