GALLICA Albariño 2015
(Calaveras, California) $36
Creamy. Even tender. Exquisitely pure and long. When I think those thoughts, I think Meursault or some other ravishing French Burgundy. But this wine is something I could never have imagined—a California albariño that tastes nothing like the simple fresh albariños of Spain, and for that matter, nothing like any California white wine I know. It’s delicious uncharted territory. A whole new universe of what albariño can taste like. Seductive. And impossible not to like. (Gallica is a tiny winery owned by Rosemary Cakebread, the former winemaker of Spottswoode).
