The number of grape varieties permitted in the French regions Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre (blanc), both in the Loire Valley. Many other places worldwide–California and Bordeaux for example–allow sauvignon blanc to be blended with other varieties, notably semillon or muscadelle. But Sancerre and Poully-Fumé are strictly sauvignon.
