Number of grams of SO2 that need to be injected into the atmosphere to reflect enough sunlight to offset the warming effects of one ton of carbon dioxide. Called “stratospheric solar geoengineering,” the controversial technique is currently being studied by Harvard University and the National Academies of Sciences. The U.S. already releases approximately 1.8 million tons of CO2 a year into the atmosphere from cars and various industries.
