Approximate number of years that groundwater has been depleting in California according to research by the Global Institute for Water Security at the University of Saskatchewan. The research also suggests that in the wake of two severe drought periods (2006-2010 and 2011-2016), the rate of water depletion in California may be accelerating due to increased evaporation, itself a result of a warmer atmosphere. Groundwater, scientists say, takes a long time to recover and requires moisture steadily seeping through layers of soil and rock.
