Approximate cost per acre (in U.S. dollars) to bury vines—by hand—in parts of Washington State each winter. The canes of the vines are buried to protect them from sub-freezing temperatures which can kill the trunk and buds for the coming year. About three years out of every decade, cold weather damages some exposed vineyards in Washington.
