Amount (in US$) donated recently by a San Joaquin Valley, California, farmer to the University of California at Davis to begin research on California’s suitability for agave farming. Agave plants (from which tequila and mezcal are made) are extremely drought tolerant. Already, farmers in the agriculturally rich San Joaquin Valley have had to pull up hundreds of thousands of acres of other crops because there isn’t enough water to keep them alive.
