This one AVA (American Viticultural Area) is so large it covers more than a third of the state and spills over into Oregon. 99% of all Washington grapes are grown here. The valley, a 2-million year old river system, was carved out by some 20 cataclysmic floods that resulted from collapsing glacial ice dams.
