Approximate number of millions of years ago that California actively began “growing” into its current form. The impetus was a collision –the crashing of the Pacific Plate into the North America plate. North America won. The Sierra Nevada mountains sprang up from the subsequent volcanic tumult, and to the west, crustal “add-ons” from the Pacific Ocean floor formed the deep underpinning of California’s coastal wine valleys.
