Year the first coffeehouse was established, according to DrinkingCup.net. The humble coffee plant was first discovered in Ethiopia, and taken to the Islamic Holy City of Mecca (Saudi Arabia) where coffeehouses began. From there coffee and coffeehouses spread to Turkey and ultimately to Oxford, England, where the West’s first coffeehouse appeared in 1651. From Oxford, coffee spread around Europe and the world.
