Year the French microbiologist Louis Pasteur (1822 – 1895) discovered the process of alcoholic fermentation, revealing for the first time how grapes become wine.  Although a Dutch scientist named van Leeuwenhoek is credited with the specific discovery of yeasts in 1680, it took almost two centuries before Pasteur revealed the mystery of how yeasts work.
