1907
The first year that a lighted ball dropped down the flagpole atop One Times Square in New York City as thousands of cheering celebrants rang in the New Year below. Seven versions of the Ball have graced the festivities. The first was 5 feet in diameter, made of iron and wood, adorned with one hundred light bulbs, and weighed 700 pounds. The current ball weighs nearly six tons, is twelve feet in diameter, and is covered in 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles illuminated by 32,256 LEDs.
