Approximate number of vineyards now in England and Wales, according to reporting by Jancis Robinson in the Financial Times. According to the trade organization WineGB, 8.7 million vines have been planted in Britain in the past five years. Many of these are to be found in southern England where the chalky limestone soils are now home to sensational sparkling wines made by the traditional (Champagne) method.
