Price (in millions of U.S.$) paid for the entire 150-acre Cole Ranch Appellation in 2019. Located in the cool hills of western Mendocino county, the AVA (the smallest in the U.S.) contains just under 60 acres (24 hectares) of vineyards. Purchaser Mike Lucia, owner of Rootdown Wine Cellars, intends to graft over some of the original blocks of primarily cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, and merlot planted in the 1970s, with alpine-inspired varieties such as mondeuse, savagnin, and poulsard.
