Value (in millions of U.S.$) of fake Penfolds wine attributed to a country-wide counterfeiting network shut down by Chinese police earlier this month. The operation (active for about three years) repackaged cheap bulk wine as top Penfolds wine (Penfolds is one of Australia’s most coveted brands, especially in China), complete with phony anti-counterfeit stickers. Trafficking in fake Australian wines in China may be exacerbated by the 212% tariff China recently levied against Australia.
