Total number of American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) in Washington State with the addition of Rocky Reach earlier this month. Over 32,000 acres, Rocky Reach lies totally within the Columbia Valley AVA between Chelan and Wenatchee. According to Washington State Wine Commission, “The name [Rocky Reach] originated from steamboat captains in the late 1800s who used the term to describe the rapids within a stretch, or ‘reach,’ of the Columbia River.”
