Number of feet now legally allowed between vine rows in Champagne. For over a century, no more than 5 feet between rows was allowed. The rationale— forcing vines to compete for resources— created higher quality grapes at lower yields. A recent study found that a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions could be achieved if rows were expanded for better equipment to be used. This new regulation could help the region reach their target of 25% fewer carbon emissions by 2025.
