Approximate number of breweries in the US as of the end of 2021 according to the Brewer’s Association and reporting in The Economist. In 1982, there were fewer than 100 breweries in the entire country. The dramatic rise in the number of breweries (even during the Covid pandemic) has been powered by the popularity of craft beer, which now accounts for 13% of total beer output and is growing by 8% a year, while sales of traditional beer remain flat.
