Percentage of grapes in the United States that are mechanically harvested according to a review by researchers at the University of California, Davis. Previous studies have shown that a 50% reduction in labor costs is possible when machine harvesting is used instead of hand harvesting. An experimental “touchless” vineyard at the UC Davis Oakville Station has been developed to help growers observe how machines can help reduce costs and handle labor shortages.
