According to a fascinating new study, married couples who are over age 50 and who have the same drinking habits as their partner tend to be happier than those couples whose drinking habits are not aligned. The study, conducted at the University of Michigan and published in The Journals of Gerontology, found that the amount that people drank was less important than whether both partners had the same habit of drinking or not drinking. Women in particular became increasingly dissatisfied with their marriage over time when only they, and not their partner, drank. Marital harmony—who knew it was another of wine’s many benefits?
