“Dear Karen, I've got a 2002 Chateau Souverain Syrah Port. Since it's fortified and I've maintained it properly, should it still be good?” —Scotty V. (Papillon, Nebraska)

Hi Scotty. I would think so, but we decided to call the winemaker to get a full report. Chateau Souverain’s winemaker at the time was Ed Killian. Here’s Ed’s response: “Absolutely the 2002 Syrah ‘port’ is still in great shape—probably better than a few years ago. I have some from the 1990’s that are spectacular! Because they are high alcohol, sweet dessert wines they have tremendous aging capacity.” So, there you have it—directly from the source.
