A couple of months ago, in response to the COVID pandemic, Major League Baseball made spitting illegal. Ok, I thought. Who wants to watch men spit saliva, sunflower seeds, and tobacco anyway? But then a dreaded realization came over me. Professional wine tasting requires—SPITTING!!!! What if wine events are allowed but spitting is not? Hello? Has anyone thought this through? Forget baseball players; WE in the wine biz need to spit. Besides, it’s taken me 30 years to get good at spitting. I hate 2020.
