ARNALDO CAPRAI Montefalco Rosso 2019
(Montefalco, Umbria, Italy) $25
Here’s an Italian red that’s firing on all cylinders and deserves a fall night and a slow cooked pork roast or a thick meat-sauced pasta. Montefalco is an historic hill town in Umbria, the small province next door to Tuscany. The reds here are made from Sangiovese and Sagrantino grapes, and the wines are often inky purple powerhouses—bigger, deeper, bolder, and way more gripping than, say, Chianti. The Arnaldo Caprai winery makes many of the region’s best wines. This one is juicy, rich, and tannic with waves of plum, violet, cinnamon, and cracked pepper notes. Pour it into a carafe or decanter to let it mellow out a bit. And then get ready for a wine that tastes like it costs more than it does. (14.5% abv)
