DOMAINE WEINBACH "Clos des Capucins" Muscat Reserve 2014
(Alsace, France) $35
This is the wine I want to drink all summer–a dry wine that floats on a cloud of crispness, minerality, spice, and fruit (imagine a lightning bolt of apricots). Not a simple wine, the “Clos des Capucins” muscat is complex enough that you could drink it through the night and “see” entirely new ideas with every sip. It’s also a “cool” wine–the fresh flavors suggest clean cold sunlight, nothing warm or heavy. Lastly, Domaine Weinbach (owned by the Faller family since 1898) is a family of women in the wine business–mother Colette (CEO) and daughters Catherine (in charge of marketing) and Laurence (the winemaker; who unexpectedly passed away at the age of 47 two years ago). This vintage was Laurence’s last, though she only got to see the grapes, not make the wine. It holds a special magic.
