IL CARNASCIALE Il Caberlot 2012
(Tuscany, Italy) $275
Here it is– the only wine in the world based on the grape variety caberlot (thought to be cross of cabernet franc and merlot). The variety was “discovered” in the 1960s in an abandoned vineyard near Padua, Italy, and is now made only by the tiny Podere Il Carnasciale. The 2012 is a stunning wine—one of the richest reds I’ve tasted in many years and certainly one of the top wines of Tuscany. Extremely focused and pure, it’s a wine of incredible beauty and luscious depth. Only available in magnums, all of which are numbered by hand.
