Year that the Russians founded a permanent settlement in Sonoma County–the first newcomers to reside there along with Native Americans.  Mostly fur traders, the Russians established a fort–later known as Fort Ross–on the Sonoma Coast. Thirty years later, the fort was abandoned. In the meantime, Spanish missionaries established  the most northern of California’s missions and vineyards in the present day city of Sonoma.
