Number of châteaux in the Medoc region of Bordeaux designated today as Cru Bourgeois. The Cru Bourgeois are a loosely knit group of producers who were “overlooked” by the 1855 Classification. Today, unlike in former times, all châteaux in the group carry the same rank. To be included, a château must submit its wines annually to an independent tasting panel. The words Cru Bourgeois usually appear on the label.
