Number of millions of straws used daily in drinks in the U.S.–laid end to end, enough to circle the globe 2 1/2 times every day. Although seemingly innocuous, straws clog landfills and litter coasts where animals and birds ingest them. The National Park Service and major concessioners like Xanterra have started a “Be Straw Free” initiative at Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and other parks. Bravo. Who needs a tube to drink a Margarita anyway?
