Number of acres of farmland in the San Joaquin Valley that will need to be permanently “retired” in the next 20 years according to a recent study by the Public Policy Institute of California. The megadrought in California, exacerbated by impoverished sinking water tables, mean that large swaths of the valley have no access to water. The valley grows most of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts in the United States.
